Maybe it was a combination of how much walking we did yesterday and how little sleep we got the night before, but we barely accomplished anything today. Mostly, What just did Facebook things, and I mostly just played Batman. I think both of us were waiting for the other to say "Hey, we should probably go out and do something now. Oh well. These things happen. Even a relatively unproductive day is still an amazing day when shared with your best friend.

We were going to go to the Grilled Cheese Grill tonight, but the roommate ended up getting dragged to a birthday party at the last minute, so we have had to reschedule that for later in the week. Instead, we went to Thai Lily for dinner. The roommate and I eat there fairly regularly, but we rarely dine in. This time, we dined in due to the lack of vehicular roommate. This will probably be the last time I do that. The service was pretty terrible, and whatever CD they were playing was stuck, and we got treated to the same elevator music version of the same 50's song over and over again for the entire meal. The food was as delicious as always, though.

When we got back, I bought 'Splosion Man on Xbox Live. I had been showing What the demo earlier in the day, and he found it just as charming and hilarious as I did. I can't remember why I never got around to buying that game. It's so freaking hilarious. Basically, you are a completely psychotic experiment gone wrong. You run around a lab, repeatedly detonating yourself to destroy any barriers (or scientists) that get in your way. The character generates an almost constant stream of nonsense noise, which would be tiresome if it wasn't so fantastically hilarious. It just impossible to stay in a bad mood playing this game. It's far too silly.

Tomorrow is going to be a much more structured day. I think we're doing Hawthorne during the day, and then a rose garden if it's not too rain. Sushi is definitely the plan for dinner.

I had a What! [12:32a]

drave117
[ mood | happy ]

So tired right now... I had to get up at around 6:30 this morning in order to get to the airport before What's plane landed. This was a challenge, considering I didn't fall asleep until after three, mostly because I was too excited about his visit. ♥ Anyway, I got to the airport a few minutes before his plane landed. He packs light, especially knowing we have laundry in our apartment now, so we didn't need to drop anything off back at my place first, and went straight into hunting for adventures.

It was around 9:30 when we started approaching downtown, so we decided to check and see if Lloyd Center was open yet. Not all of the stores were open, so we wandered around for a bit first. We took some pictures of a Scientology booth that had copies of Dianetics in Russian, Japanese, and Arabic! The Pirate Store opened up at 10, so we poked around in there for a bit. They were sold out of awesome pirate coats due to Halloween, but I did buy a cute little new sleeve for my house key, shaped like a skull. After thoroughly exploring the Pirate Store, we made a quick detour to Van Duyn. They had a couple of new truffles, but neither was particularly up to snuff, or maybe my tastes are just getting more sophisticated.

By this time we were both getting pretty hungry, so we decided to walk to Blossoming Lotus. I had a a barbecue bowl, and What had a bowl of vegan chili. I really should eat there more often, considering how good and healthy their food is. By the time we finished lunch, we were both feeling pretty tired (we both only got three hours of sleep, after all!), but not quite ready to head home. Instead, I took What to check out Oblation. (My favorite paper craft store!) We spent a lot of time wandering around in there, but didn't really buy anything. They have some pretty amazing paper, and a bunch of really need craft things as well. If I do end up making Christmas presents for people, the packaging will definitely come from Oblation.

After Oblation, we set off in search of a restroom. I remembered we were near a Whole Foods, so we went there. On the way, we popped to a really overpriced clothing store to check the prices on some corduroy jeans. Whole foods was relatively uneventful, although we did try the Ruby Jewell honey lavender ice cream sandwich. When I was coming up to the counter to be rung up, something adorable happened. I walked up, and the clerk told me that she wasn't finished ringing up the previous guy, who had stepped away to get one more item, and we would need to wait for him. She then said "We could sing a song together!" I tried to take her up on the offer, but the guy came back to fast. Still, it was the cutest suggestion I have ever heard from a clerk.

What almost bought a new coffee filter at Whole Foods, but we decided to support a more local chain, so we hiked up toward Kitchen Kaboodle. On the way, we stopped in a really odd store called Cargo. I don't really know how to describe it. It's kind of like a cross between an antique warehouse and a gag store in a mall. I would have taken a bunch of pictures of it, but my digital camera's battery ran out earlier today. Continuing on to Trader Joe's yielded some of the things What needed, but not everything. Kitchen Kaboodle yielded more of what he needed. I also bought a neat little cheese-slicing device. There were a couple other stores we popped into, but I am drawing a blank right now. Eventually, we came back home at around five.

For What's big welcome-back dinner, we opted for Salvador Molly's. The food was just as amazing as ever, and I got to try a bunch of new things. I tried their nachos for an appetizer, and [info]sailstosea had the garlic cheese fries. He also had an odd noodle salad, and did the Great Balls of Fire challenge, which he passed with flying colors. What had a Catfish Po' Boy for dinner, and I had a truly amazing artichoke tamale. Our waitress was super cute and friendly, and she even talked us into desserts. What and I both had a molten lava fudge cake sort of deal with homemade cinnamon whipped cream, and the roomie had a key lime type dessert. Salvador Molly's is definitely one of my favorite restaurants in Portland, and I really need to go there more often. The food is so crazy and amazing, and it just has a really friendly and loving vibe. The perfect end to the day.

[ music | the iPod on the Xbox ]

Pro-Tip: If you have a high definition television, and you plug your iPod into your Xbox 360, and you use the 360 audio player to play your music, and then you press Y to full-screen the Visualization plug-in, it looks HOLY CRAP AMAZING! I've been cleaning the apartment all evening, and I remembered that you can actually plug an iPod into a 360, what with the USB controller ports and all, so I used it for working music. About half an hour ago, I maximized the Visualization. I've been staring at the TV for the past half hour. My mind, it is melted. But it in a good way. I feel like Homer when he sits on the vibrating recliner in the first episode with Uncle Herb.

You know what's awesome? My best friend is going to be here in less than ten hours! I haven't seen him in fifteen months. Needless to say, I am extremely excited. As soon as I finish this entry, I am going to back through the journal entries from his last visit, to remind myself which parts of Portland he has already seen. Excuse me, I will be right back. I have to smack my iPod for playing a Christmas song before Thanksgiving. (Traitorous device!) Okay, I am back. Ahh, the hazards of listening to all of your music on shuffle. Anyway, it shall be an epic visit full of amazing food, and if we actually get a day of sunshine, maybe we will hit a park or two! I even managed to squeeze another day of vacation out of my work, so Mister What shall only be on his own for two of the nine days he will be visiting me.

Nothing much to report from work today. I didn't have enough downtime to build any more Pixel Block creations, but the things I've built so far are a huge hit. I suspect numerous coworkers will be picking up some of their own at some point. Personally, I am hoping for a huge sale at ThinkGeek on Black Friday, so I can buy five or six more boxes of them. Then I can have a pickle jar of each color pixel, and I can get more ambitious with my sprites. I think I can do some Super Nintendo ones once I have a bigger stock to draw from. SNES sprites don't actually have that many more pixels than NES ones; they just have a lot more colors. I've only got twelve to work with, but they are all translucent except for the black, so I bet I can create quite a variety of colors by making my sculptures two layers thick.

Another great thing about having these blocks to fidget with at work is that they remind my hands how much I like making stuff, which is a good thing to be reminded of with Decemberween coming up...

i checked my grades for the first time ever;
i never had grades before! no not in undergrad and not
at brown! i have all As. ahahahahaaaaa.

getting grades is really strange. at this point
i don't understand why grades matter.
for one class, the writing center
pedagogy class we all had to take last fall, i wasn't
sure, cause some people had been docked points
for piddling stupid things; we had to write a dumb
paper for the witch professor, and i just took mine and
ripped it into tiny pieces and threw it in the trashcan at the
bus stop when i got it back, so i didn't know really, but i got an A
in that too; whatever. now no one even has to work
in the writing center unless they want to, which is much more
humane, cause that was a terrible thing about last year.
this year is much better. i have lots of time to watch tv
and make apple cider and write about watching tv.

LiveJournal Major Notes: Notes, Tweaks, Bug Kills, LJ_Cares! [01:53p]

news

[theljstaff]

Notes augmented

We've enhanced and de-bugged Notes. If you haven't tried it yet, now's the time! You can create a private note when you ban multiple users. You can also delete multiple notes at once. Lastly, paid users have the option to add a note (visible only to you) whenever you add or remove a friend (guaranteed to avoid embarrassing social mishaps). If you don't currently have a paid account, you can upgrade now! It only takes a few minutes and costs less than a bad shopping mall haircut (plus, it's way more fashionable)!

Product tweaks and bug kill

  1. In another effort to zap spam, comments containing links from domains LiveJournal deems untrustworthy are now automatically screened
  2. If you sign up to get notifications of the Writer's Block question of the day, you'll now see the daily question in the email notification, so you'll have a little extra time to ponder before you post. You can subscribe to Writers Block notifications here
  3. The issue causing random comments to vanish has been fixed!
  4. If you visit a LiveJournal page and get prompted to log in, you'll be returned to the same page after you sign in (Thanks, Dreamwidth)!
  5. If you don't edit the timestamp for an entry at all, the entry timestamp will indicate the time the entry was posted instead of the time the Update Journal page was loaded
  6. Comments with paddings/backgrounds render correctly within the comment box (and will no longer wrap outside the box and break frames/margins)

New FCK fixes rich text editor!

  1. We've updated our RTE (Rich Text Editor) to FCKeditor version 2.6.5
  2. When switching from the RTE to HTML editor, links for syndicated feeds are no longer broken
  3. RTE now functions properly in Safari 4.0
  4. An extra line/space will not be auto-inserted whenever you switch from RTE to HTML editor
  5. The insert image link now works correctly in all browsers

LiveJournal Cares

We’re pleased to introduce you to [info]lj_cares, a new LiveJournal community dedicated to raising awareness and funds for U.S. charitable organizations that improve the health and well-being of people around the world. Each month, we’ll spotlight a nonprofit that is making a significant global impact through medical research, public outreach, and/or humanitarian social programs. Charities will be selected in accordance with the U.S. calendar of national health observances based on a high rating (of over 60%) on Charity Navigator and global scope of impact.

In this, our inaugural month of November, we will celebrate national adoption month by offering a charitable virtual gift (priced at $2.99) to support Love Without Boundaries, an organization that saves the lives of orphans with life-threatening diseases and places them in loving homes around the world. LiveJournal will donate 100% of the proceeds from the sale of charitable vgifts (we'll cover the cost of credit card transaction fees). To learn more about Love Without Boundaries, please visit [info]lj_cares and read about how they helped save Baby Kang and the Rainbow Twins from fatal illnesses, who are now thriving in nurturing families. You can purchase your Love Without Boundaries gifts in the Virtual Gift shop.

2:59 PM 11/11/09 · My love of crossovers nearly joygasmed cuz of this. First there was the original crew of Star Trek teaming with the X·Men, interesting turn of the Phoenix Force combining with Gary Mitchell. Then in another comic, roundabout the same time within a couple months, the crew of the Enterprise·D wind up in the past, on their way home from Star Trek: First Contact, but not their past and in an effort to get home they cross paths with the X·Men...

...the whole thing got mixed up with that time travelling despot Kang the Conqueror.

To finalize all this, after the crew of the Enterprise·D got home they discovered that somehow the X·Men got caught up in their wake. Which worked out well as their was an issue with a world where a good chunk of the population started randomly generating superhuman abilities, which was well done not in comic form this time but an actual novel.

Wolverine reprogramming the holodeck so he and Worf could go toe to toe with Juggernaut, Sabretooth, and a few other of his rogues made for a fun ending.
